300+ Best Charades Words List (Easy, Medium, Hard Difficulty)
A great charades game lives or dies on its word list. Words too easy and the game ends in 30 seconds; too hard and players lose energy. This article gives you 300+ words across 8 categories and 3 difficulty tiers — enough variety for several game nights without repeating. Each list is sized for typical play (10-15 words per category-tier so you can mix freely). New to charades? Check our rules guide first.
How to use these lists
- Pick 1 difficulty + 2-3 categories for a single game session. 30-50 total words is plenty for ~30 minutes of play.
- Mix difficulties as a "ladder": easy words for warm-up rounds, medium for the core game, hard for late-game challenge.
- Print or copy the list on paper slips, fold them, drop in a hat. Or use an online charades app to deliver words to one player's phone privately.

Tips for choosing words on the fly
- Match difficulty to player ability. If the actor is shy or new, give them an easy word. If they're a pro, hand them something challenging.
- Avoid culturally-specific words in international or mixed groups. "Marmite" or "Vegemite" are great in their home countries but mean nothing elsewhere.
- Vary the categories across rounds. Three movies in a row gets stale even for movie fans.
- Save the funny ones for late game. "Procrastinating" or "Tiptoeing" produce the best laughs but only when the group is warmed up.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words do I need for one game?
- About 30-50. With 6 players each going twice, that's 12 turns. Always have extras in case you need to swap out a word that doesn't work or got accidentally seen.
- Can I add my own words?
- Yes, definitely. Themed game nights (only Disney movies, only foods, only office in-jokes) are some of the most fun. Keep difficulty consistent within a theme.
- What's the best length for charades words?
- Single nouns or short phrases (2-3 words) work best. Longer phrases like "the cat sat on the mat" are too hard to act out word-by-word.
- Are these words good for kids?
- The "easy" lists are kid-appropriate. Many medium words also work. Avoid the "hard" lists for under-12s — they include more abstract concepts.
- Can I play charades online with these words?
- Yes. Our Pantomime game at gamingrooms.net has a built-in 3000-word catalog (which includes most of the words above) plus the option for teams to write their own custom words. Link below.
